For Jo Claxton, the arts, creativity, communication, and community service have always been a vital part of both her professional and personal life. Prior to joining Aging Wisdom, Jo spent two decades designing and animating games and unique learning environments for children.
Necessity is the mother of invention. Jo’s experience as a long-distance care partner for her mother living with Alzheimer’s has sparked many learning opportunities. One difficult visit to the hospital caused anxiety for her mother resulting in nervous repetitive removal of medical dressings and bedding.
Jo had never heard of fidget blankets but created one in the moment out of materials readily available at the hospital. Soon she found her mother happily engaged in a purposeful activity and becoming calmer.
Through that moment of inspiration, Jo grew to recognize how engaging her mother in personalized, tailored activities brightened her spirits and provided a way for Jo to be more present in her life. And she continues to educate herself as she navigates her mother’s care and provides creative engagement for clients.
As a Creative Engagement Specialist, Jo welcomes the opportunity to apply her expertise and interests through purposeful, enriching time with clients. She applies her insights and wealth of experience to improving clients’ well-being and sense of purpose.
