CULTIVATING PURPOSE
The drive for purpose is a natural human inclination. The desire to be an active member in our homes and community doesn’t dissipate with age or circumstance. Creating meaningful and engaging projects tailored to abilities and interests nurture and build a sense of purpose.
Our Creative Engagement Specialists can provide:
- Personalized projects that resonate with their interests, such as gardening, knitting, or music, and adapt them to their current strengths
- Tailored options for experiences to offer a sense of control and involvement.
- Social interactions by facilitating connections with friends and family, or involvement in community groups and outings, which can foster a sense of belonging and importance.
- Support in routine daily tasks like reading the newspaper, discussing current events, making a cup of tea, setting the table, organizing a bookshelf, or walking to the mailbox, which can provide a sense of contribution and purpose.
- Recognition, praise, and celebrate efforts and accomplishments to boost self-esteem and reinforce sense of purpose.
- Established routines or small rituals to build structure and a sense of continuity to their days.
RESULTS: Maintaining and enhancing dignity, autonomy, and self-esteem while benefiting quality of life and overall well-being.
EXAMPLES:
A client who ran a service-oriented family business for many years now volunteers time through a service group facilitated by a local senior center. Projects include assembling hygiene kits for a human services organization supporting unhoused neighbors and gardening projects at neighborhood public spaces.
Expressing joy through art, another client regularly engages in rock painting with a Creative Engagement Specialist. These art sessions are animated with stories, singing, and plans for sharing their creations. They then take a walk around the neighborhood and leave the artful rocks for others to discover and enjoy.
