Addressing Social Anxiety

Addressing Social Isolation and Loneliness

Social isolation and loneliness can impact health and well-being as critically as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Social engagement, on the other hand, directly and positively influences physical, cognitive, mental, and emotional health. Creative and social support can improve quality of life, particularly in later years.

TESTIMONIAL & EXAMPLES:

“Oh! I am so glad you are here! I was just thinking ‘today I’m going to have to be bored’ but then you arrived.” - Client upon arrival of their Creative Engagement Specialist
Mobility changes can often lead to isolation. One client expressed to her Creative Engagement Specialist (CES) she was embarrassed by her new wheelchair, so she stayed in her room more & more. The CES planned a zoo outing with other older adults. The client wasn’t sure she wanted to attend. Through encouragement and meeting others in similar mobility situations, she stayed, used the wheelchair, and had a wonderful, engaging visit.
Major life events can also lead to isolation. After the death of her husband, and the COVID-19 pandemic, one client remained in her home – rarely leaving or talking with others. Through intentional visits with a Creative Engagement Specialist (CES), they slowly built trust and rapport. The client began leaving regularly with CES for walks and lunches out. She has experienced a positive boost to her moods and well-being, while also exercising and eating better.
