The heart of our mission* at Aging Wisdom is to support positive aging and help our clients to live well, care well, and age well. This applies to everyone, regardless of “race, color, gender, gender identity, gender expression, marital status, sexual orientation, political ideology, age, creed, religion, heritage, ancestry, national origin, or sensory, mental or physical ability.”1

Finding and navigating aging services and supports can be challenging for many, and we recognize that older LGBTQ+ adults sometimes face additional barriers.

LGBTQ+ elders may experience systems of oppression which can include homophobia, trauma and estrangement from family and friends, rejection in the form of harassment and discrimination, and higher rates of mistreatment and social isolation.

Our team understands the importance of providing a welcoming, holistic, and mindful Aging Life Care practice that builds trust, offers tailored solutions, and advocates for clients.

In support of LGBTQ+ older adults, their care partners, and other supports, Aging Wisdom is an inclusive and affirming Aging Life Care practice, and as such, we:

  • Celebrate and embrace diversity, respecting individual abilities, cultures, experiences, and histories.
  • Are dedicated to continuing education to ensure we know current best practices in LGBTQ+ health and community.
  • Create and foster safe and inclusive spaces, where everyone feels welcome, accepted, and respected.
  • Use inclusive language, respect pronouns and names, and affirm gender identity.
  • Are open and approachable. We provide a safe environment where clients and their care partners feel comfortable discussing their perspectives, experiences, goals, and needs.
  • Inquire about and acknowledge individual experiences and challenges. We listen. We validate feelings and hold space.
  • Are mindful of and sensitive to unique healthcare, housing, and personal care needs.
  • Practice and advocate for inclusive policies that protect the rights and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Recognize the importance of chosen family and supportive networks.
  • Address social isolation and loneliness and create opportunities for LGBTQ+ older adults to feel valued, supported, and understood.
  • Support and participate in LGBTQ+ organizations that focus on LGBTQ+ rights and well-being, especially those addressing the needs of older adults.

Our commitment: We believe everyone should have the best opportunities to live, care, and age well.  Our team at Aging Wisdom upholds the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice of the Aging Life Care Association®, which includes:

Respect for Clients’ Rights and Dignity
An Aging Life Care Professional® treats clients with respect, as complete individuals with their own history, narrative, and unique cultural identity. An Aging Life Care Professional respects the rights of each client, including the right to privacy, and, for the vulnerable client, strives to balance client autonomy with the need for protection and safety.
