What is your role at Aging Wisdom?
I am a Creative Engagement Specialist.
What made you want to work in the field of aging?
Growing up I was surrounded by elders. As a young child, I would accompany my mother when she would go to visit elderly friends and family. Little did I know at the time how that experience would leave a lasting impression on me.
How has your job changed in the time you have worked at Aging Wisdom?
Originally, my role was that of a caregiver. I would help clients with daily needs, be that shopping, doctor appointments, gardening… things that would allow them to remain safely in their own homes for a longer period. Over the past few years, the role has evolved into Creative Engagement, which allows for a more person-centered, holistic approach to supporting a client’s well-being and quality of life.
What do you love about your job?
Building a connection with each of my clients is especially important to me. Getting to know each individual and discovering what brings them joy is my mission. Learning to be in the moment and to be an exquisite listener.
Tell us about a professional success story that you are proud of.
I had a client with a very independent spirit, that was not too keen on the idea of having someone around. Happily, our meet-and-greet went better than anticipated, and she agreed to have me come back. Our first outing was a trip to her favorite grocery store; not the closest, but her favorite. All I can say is that we enjoyed getting into ‘good trouble’ and I miss her to this day.
What motivates you?
Making that connection. Finding a way to bring someone understanding and joy.
