What is your role at Aging Wisdom?
Creative Engagement Specialist
What made you want to work in the field of aging?
I was inspired to work with older adults following my family’s experience caring for my parents as they faced health issues in their later years. I completed the UW Certificate in Gerontology program and that further inspired and reinforced my passion to work in the field of aging.
How has your job changed in the time you’ve worked at Aging Wisdom?
I have been a part of the AW Creative Engagement Team for over three years, and my job is continuously changing as I work with different clients and families and their unique circumstances and goals. We are also working to bring Creative Engagement to adult family homes in a group setting, and I am excited to be a part of that.
What do you love about your job?
My clients and my colleagues! It is a privilege to work with older adults in this capacity. I have learned so much from each of my clients and am consistently reminded to show up and be present in the moment. I also work with the best of the best; my colleagues inspire me through their knowledge and work.
Tell us about a professional success story that you’re proud of.
I work with a client living with Alzheimer’s and was with her as she transitioned from living in her own home to assisted living. I recently began using a “pocket talker” during our visits, as she struggles to hear and hearing aides were not a good fit. It is a joy to see her face light up every time she puts on the headset and can hear me. She loves to sing and laugh, and that has only increased with the use of the pocket talker. She is engaging more with other residents as well, now that she can hear them!
What motivates you?
Being a bright light in my clients’ days, supporting my clients and their families through challenging times, and being part of an incredible team doing important and meaningful work.
