Some physical, emotional, and cognitive changes are likely as we grow older. When these changes interfere with safety, self-care, and personal well-being, it may indicate a need for assistance.
Here are six common signs that reveal an older adult may need help:
Difficulty with Routine Daily Activities
- Unopened mail, unpaid bills, and managing finances

- An uncharacteristically messy living environment
- Getting dressed, planning and preparing meals, or maintaining the home
- Driving challenges and unexplained dents or scratches on the car
Mobility Issues
- Noticeable changes in walking or movement
- Increased frequency of falls; trouble navigating stairs and uneven pavement
- Difficulty getting up from seating or out of bed
Cognitive Changes
- Memory lapses, confusion, not recognizing people, or difficulty with problem-solving
- Getting lost in familiar places
- Difficulty following conversations
- Asking the same question or telling the same story repeatedly
Neglecting Personal Care
- Poor hygiene or grooming habits
- Wearing the same clothes days on end or dressing inappropriately for the weather
- Not visiting a health care professional or dentist, especially when there is a persistent problem
- Medication mismanagement
Weight Loss or Poor Nutrition
- Significant weight loss or gain, or lack of appetite
- Expired or spoiled food in the refrigerator, or an empty pantry
Emotional and Behavioral Changes
- Loss of interest in hobbies and activities they once enjoyed
- Signs of depression, anxiety, or unusual mood swings
- Withdrawing from social interactions
Recognizing these signs early can help ensure that the person you care about receives the necessary support to maintain their quality of life.
